Seminar conducted by Dr. Pinky Valdes
November 26, 2014
Brasserie 21, Security Bank Center
Ayala Avenue, Makati City
The Seminar, “Break the Silence” conducted by Dr. Pinky Valdes on November 26, 2014 was part of Zonta Club of Makati & Environs Foundation, Inc. participation in Zonta International’s 16 days of Activism Against Gender Violence.
It was preceded by lunch graced by District Governor Lalivan Karnchanachari, Area Director Bing Carreon, Area Vice Director Cora Tan, Past International President Livie Ferry, Past District Gov. and current District Chair for Advocacy, Beng Puyat, ZI Centennial Anniversary Committee member & District Historian, Linda Panlilio, District Chair for PR & Communciations Chona Lopez and ZCMEF members.
The Seminar focused on the prevention of violence against women and girls through Education. Its purpose was to equip the 24 EWSP scholars with the knowledge of their rights, an understanding of its cultural and psychological root causes and an effort to find effective mechanisms to ensure its eradication.
In her essay on what she learned from the seminar, scholar Venus Camille Ammugauan wrote: “Once you cross that bridge, you can’t go back” and “Enjoy your adolescence”, these words from Dr. Valdes are the ones I will never forget. I learned that you should always think very hard about what you will do, know the possible consequences and be responsible for actions that you make.”
Dr. Valdes also spoke about conquering fear and standing up for women’s rights especially by saying “Stop” when confronted by violence.
Comments from some of the scholars –
Joni Rose Magkalas – “The seminar was perfect and it really helped me realize and understand more about myself as a woman.”
Lyssa Catherine C. Hipolito “I am so blessed to attend a seminar that taught us to speak up. I think it all boils down to know when to say no. We must be courageous enough to fight for our rights and also not let our happiness depend on other people. Happiness should start within us. Whatever fears we may have, we just have to ‘shake it off’ !”
Dr. Valdes was able to connect with her audience and put her message through effectively. It had a great impact on the scholars.
EWSP does not only provide financial support but organizes seminars, such as this one, to help guide its scholars and prepare them for their future.
